About MSCP

The Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychology was established in 2010 by a group of clinical psychologists who were passionate about developing the field of clinical psychology in Malaysia while educating the Malaysian public about mental health and treatment. As an organisation comprised of professionals as well as student members, we hope to promote continuous education in clinical psychology.

Today, we are a growing organisation. As our numbers multiply, we hope that our presence and influence in the sphere of mental health in Malaysia will likewise continue to grow. Our website is dedicated to this mission.

The Directory page will act as a repository of all our registered members who are qualified to practice clinical psychology here in Malaysia. This will include an easy-to-use search function, allowing members of the public to find clinicians who meet their desired criteria.

The Events page will be our announcement platform, where any and all events that we organise or are a part of will be shared. This will include programs geared towards practitioners as well as the general public. Watch this place for some exciting events!

We look forward to be able to serve our fellow clinical psychologists and the populace of Malaysia. Onwards and forwards towards a mentally, emotionally and psychologically healthy Malaysia!

Establishment & History of MSCP

The idea for a professional association for clinical psychologists began in the early 2000 with a handful of clinical psychologists working towards having a professional voice and registration to protect professional integrity as well as public interest. Due to the small number of available clinical psychologists then it took a number of years before more clinical psychologists became interested in setting up a professional organization. Issues that led to the need for a professional association included professional registration, representation, regulation, and indemnity. Meetings were held in Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Health Psychology Unit of UKM’s Kuala Lumpur campus, as well as at HELP University College in building up and refining objectives for a professional association.

By 2009, a committed group began working towards setting up a protem committee for what we now know as the Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychology. A meeting of around 40 clinical psychologists in Dec 2009 elected a protem committee that then worked on registering the Society with the Registrar of Societies.

This protem committee was:

  • President:  Prof. Dr. Alvin Ng Lai Oon

  • Vice President:  Dr. Rahmatullah Khan

  • Secretary: Ms. Yang Wai Wai

  • Asst. Secretary: Pn. Safiyyah Abd Aziz (who took over Wai Wai when she went for her PhD)

  • Treasurer: Ms. Loh Sit Fong

  • Council Members:  Prof. Hjh. Normah Che Din, Assoc. Prof. Vijayalakshmi C. Ratnam (Vijichandran), Dr. Lynne Yong Ee Lin, Dr. Rachel Ting Sing Kiat

It is also important to acknowledge the pioneering work of those who laid the foundations of building our new association since the beginnings in 2001. There are too many names to mention because we received many contributions from all over.

It is also important to mention that the development and establishment of this Society has been given support by the psychiatrist community as well as other health sciences professionals.
