The world is more connected than ever, and for our children, the internet is a primary space for learning, entertainment, and connection. However, with these benefits come significant risks that require our collective attention.

Representing the Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychology (MSCP), Dr. Selina Ding recently attended the 2025 ASEAN ICT Forum on Child Online Protection in Kuala Lumpur. Hosted by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), this forum brought together experts from across the region to strengthen how we protect our youngest digital citizens.

💡Key takeaways for our community:
1️⃣ It takes a village: Protecting children from cyberbullying, grooming, and harmful content is a shared responsibility across ASEAN.
2️⃣ Empowering Adults: Parents and teachers need improved digital literacy to effectively guide children through the digital landscape.
3️⃣ Child-Centered Care: We must prioritize victim-centered approaches when handling cases of online exploitation.

MSCP (represented by Dr Serena In, Vice President) was invited as a stakeholder participant in a policy Lab in Kuala Lumpur as part of the ASEAN-Pacific Youth Mental Health Fellowship programme in August 2025.

This event was aimed informing policymakers for the renewal of the Malaysian National Strategic Plan for Mental Health and development of a National Plan of Action for Children and Adolescent Mental Health. The youth mental health report was finalised by end October with four areas of growth for youth support needed:
a) Services: school counselling, peer support, continuity of care, feedback.
b) Families: mental health awareness, access to services.
c) Government: increased collaboration (within the Governmental departments and beyond), increased research to support budget allocation and priorities.
d) Youth: lived experience informs promotion, places to socialise, financial literacy.

Three priority policies that could be implemented in the short-term were identified.
1) Increase collaboration between Ministries and Community Service Orgnisations (CSOs) to maximise the co-development of youth-focused services.
2) Incorporate peer support roles in mental health services.
3) Involve youth with a lived experience of mental ill-health in creating content to promote available resources and services.

Stress isn’t always something to get rid of.

Our bodies are designed to respond to demands and then return to baseline. A certain amount of stress can help us focus, learn, and perform — but when stress is prolonged or intense without enough recovery, it can start to affect mood, sleep, thinking, and the body.

A useful question isn’t “How do I avoid stress?” but rather “How do I notice when it’s tipping into overload — and how do I nudge myself back to balance?”

Stress isn’t always something to get rid of.

Through a rigorous 12-month online training program (November 14, 2025 – November 23, 2026), participants will gain advanced clinical skills, engage in supervised practice, and contribute to international research in cognitive behavioral therapy. In addition, research findings will be presented at the ACBTA Congress in Tokyo, August 2027.

In 2020, an estimated 8.5%–11% of Malaysians were living with Alzheimer’s disease — and this number is projected to rise by more than 300% by 2050.
Older adults (65+) are most affected, with risk increasing sharply with age.

Risk factors include genetics, lifestyle (e.g., poor diet, limited physical activity), and health conditions such as diabetes or hypertension.

Warning signs to look out for: persistent memory loss, confusion with time/place, difficulty completing familiar tasks, changes in mood or personality.

We shared updates on the review of programme standards, including the move of the Clinical Psychology programme into the MQA Programme Standard 2.0 for Allied Health Sciences, in line with the National Education Philosophy, Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint, and Health White Paper.

On top of that, we also highlighted feedback from our MSCP student members, provisional members, and early career members regarding their satisfaction level of the Master of Clinical Psychology programme. Suggestions were also provided in aiding our clinical psychologist graduates transition into the workforce.

This September, we are honoured to welcome Mr. Pheh Kai Shuen, Consultant Clinical Psychologist (Sessional) at private hospitals and Lecturer at the Department of Psychology and Counselling, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

Mr. Pheh brings extensive experience from his past work with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, and Singapore. His clinical interests include suicide prevention and the assessment and management of neurodevelopmental disorders, and he regularly trains professionals in psychiatry, paediatrics, emergency medicine, and public health.

This supervision session will feature case presentations by participants, followed by guided discussion with Mr. Pheh. Participants will receive clinical input and reflections from both Mr. Pheh and their peers, in a collaborative and supportive learning environment.
