The 10th of September 2020 marks the 17th year of World Suicide Prevention day. Close to 800,000 people die by suicide every year around the world, this means that one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds. For every suicide, there are more than 20 people who attempt suicide every year. The theme for this year's 'World Suicide Prevention day' is about working together to prevent suicide.
As Malaysia is still one of the countries that criminalises suicide, MCSP urges the government to take action on decriminalising it. Together, let's look beyond the act of suicide and understand the underlying pain, hopelessness and helplessness that leads some to take their own life. With greater understanding from the society, we hope to decriminalize suicide, destigmatize mental health issues and normalize seeking help.
